Longkhum is popularly known as “Ao-funemro,” meaning the vanguard village, a name bestowed by the Aos during the headhunting era.
Ao tradition holds that Longkhum is a resting place for the spirits of the dead on their onward journey to paradise.
At 6,500 feet, Longkhum is the highest altitude village in Ao country and commands a sweeping view of the surrounding hills and valleys. It is also the largest village by area, sharing boundaries with Lotha villages to the west and Sumi villages to the south.

Longkhum is one of Nagaland’s favourite village destinations for visitors looking to explore nature. It offers beautiful trekking trails and serene landscapes, a natural setting for photography.
Like other Ao villages, Longkhum celebrates Moatsü and Tsungremong every year. The community comes together for shared feasts, traditional songs and dance, and friendly traditional games.
